Royal FloraHolland members in the race for International Grower of the Year17 January 2019
The final of the International Grower of the Year takes place on 22 January 2019 during the IPM in Essen. Two of our members are among the finalists!
Last year at the IPM in Essen the Dutch threw a party. This year also looks promising. Two of our members, Oserian from Kenya and OK Plant from Naaldwijk, are among the finalists for the Grower of the Year Award 2019:
Growing in harmony with nature and the community
Oserian Development CO LTD from Kenya is competing in the Sustainability Award category. Oserian grows more than a dozen rose varieties that comprise the entire color spectrum. They work on special collections with breeders, such as 'English garden' roses, large-flowered premium roses with long stems and roses in popular pastel colors. They also grow spray carnations and limonium.
Neil Hellings, Managing Director: "We are very happy with our nomination. Especially as we are the only nominated African grower! This nomination proves that our broad initiatives to improve our sustainability are not at the expense of the quality of our products. We aim for carbon neutrality in 2019. To win would a great sign of confidence in our operations." Oserian carries the Fair Trade quality symbol and finds it important that employees work for the company with pleasure and passion. The company actively commits to the environment and the local population.
Demand-driven assortment, tailored to customer needs
OK Plant from Naaldwijk is nominated in the Finished Plants and Trees category. Rob and Desiree Olsthoorn have been the proud owners since 1990. OK Plant pays a lot of attention to the work climate and the development opportunities for employees. The company stands out from others with more than 100 varieties of Little Kolibri orchids. In their second greenhouse, they grow seasonal products such as addenda, aster, primula and cyclamen. The product lines come in various shapes with matching ceramics. Hanging and large-flowered orchids, for example, or orchids in the shape of a halo.
Desiree Olsthoorn: "We monitor the market and consumers and offer a total product. By varying the pot, we quickly respond to trends and seasons." OK Plant closely collaborates with customers. For example when it comes to shelf presentation.
